About AutoInsuranceByState
A free, independent reference for what car insurance actually costs across the United States.
What this site is
AutoInsuranceByState publishes the average cost of car insurance in every U.S. state, alongside a free calculator that estimates a premium from your age, driving record, credit tier and coverage level. Our goal is simple: help drivers understand whether they are paying a fair price before they shop.
We are an independent information resource. We are not an insurance company, agent, or broker, and we do not sell insurance.
Where our data comes from
State average premiums are drawn from the NAIC 2022/2023 Auto Insurance Database Report (combined average premium per insured vehicle, 2023 data, released February 2026) — the official dataset compiled by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
The calculator applies published industry multipliers (for age, driving record, credit tier and coverage) drawn from secondary sources such as Bankrate and ValuePenguin modeled rates. State rating rules (for example, the credit-scoring bans in California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan) are sourced from state statutes and regulators.
How we make money
The site is free to use. When you click through to compare quotes, we may earn a commission from a partner, at no extra cost to you. This never changes the averages or data we publish. See our Affiliate Disclosure for details.
Important
Every figure on this site is an estimate for informational purposes only — not an insurance quote, offer, or financial advice. For an actual rate, get a quote from a licensed insurer. See our Disclaimer.
